"The Cherokee Nuts" is a regional slang term used by poker players in the Southeast for pocket sevens. It originated and gained popularity among the tournament grinders at the World Series of Poker Circuit at Harrah's Cherokee in North Carolina.
The phrase is a play on the poker term "the nuts" (the absolute best possible hand in a given situation). Players at Harrah's Cherokee are known to affectionately, and sometimes superstitiously, overvalue or get heavily attached to pocket sevens, leading to the local nickname.
